ROUTING

Basics of routing protocols

Router

A router is a common piece of networking equipment that transmits information between two networks and does packet filtering.

Static Routing
Static routing is a data communication concept describing one way of configuring path selection of routers in computer networks.

OR

Static routing is simply the process of manually entering routes into a device's routing table

E.g

Router> enable

Router# configure terminal

Router(config)# ip route 10.10.20.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.100.1

Dynamic Routing
Dynamic routing protocols are supported by software applications running on the routing device (the router) which dynamically learn network destinations and how to get to them and also advertise those destinations to other routers.

E.g

Router> enable

Router# configure terminal

Router(config)# router eigrp 1

Router(config-router)# network 10.0.0.0 0.0.0.255

Router(config-router)# network 192.168.2.0 0.0.0.255

INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF ROUTER

These are the internal components of Router. Check out the BLOCK DIAGRAM of router system board.

ROUTER INTERFACES

LAN interface (Ethernet). Some models are equipped with built-in RJ45 connector for 10Mbps, 100Mbps or 10BaseT. One (Attachment Interface Unit) is equipped with a 15-pin AUI anymore.

For the WAN interface or leased line there are 60 pin female cables.

A Console port for initial configuration of the routers.

For remote configuration, router has auxiliary ports.
